Elkhart County Highway
Maintenance   Engineering

Scope

Design engineering is underway for the replacement of the Six Span Bridge . The existing bridge will be completely replaced because it is functionally and structurally inadequate. The existing bridge was originally constructed in 1968 and was last repaired in 1999 when the asphalt pavement was replaced.

The proposed bridge will have 7 travel lanes and an 8’ wide sidewalk on each side. The overall dimensions will be about 106’ wide by 462’ long. The bridge structure type will be an earth-filled precast concrete arch with an asphalt road surface. It will be similar in appearance to the Main Street bridge in the city of Elkhart .

Construction phasing will allow two lanes of traffic to be maintained except for short periods of time when major structural elements are being placed.

The current schedule is to advertised for construction bids in the Fall of 2008 with construction beginning in the latter part of 2008.
