Information Updates

• 04/29/08

Construction plans are nearing completion. Right-of-way acquisition is progressing and relocation of existing utilities is being coordinated with the utility companies in the project area. Construction of the project is planned to begin this October on the widened portion of the bridge so traffic will not be significantly affected until 2009.

This project has been combined with the the CR #10 Project in an effort to decrease the overall cost of both. View CR # 10 Project information below.

• 09/23/08

• We are now accepting bids for this project. See Notice to Bidders.

• 10/22/08

• To facilitate the beginning of this project, November 17 has tentatively been set as the closure date for the Six Span boat landing. Once closed, no boats will be able to launch or be recovered from the landing.

• 11/5/08

• At a regular meeting of the County Commissioners held on November 3, 2008, the construction contract for the Six Span Bridge/CR 10 Reconstruction Project was awarded to Northern Indiana Construction Company, Inc. from Mishawaka in the amount of $18, 721,707.38. Work on the project is expected to begin after the construction contracts are fully executed which is expected to occur on November 17, 2008

• A preconstruction meeting for the project was held on December 9, 2008. The general contractor, Northern Indiana Construction, indicated that right-of-way clearing would begin on December 10^th. This will consist mainly of tree and stump removal. Construction of the bridge is scheduled to begin on January 5, 2009 depending on the weather and ice on the river.

• 12/29/08  Lane Restriction

• During the department’s ongoing inspection of the Six Span Bridge, further deterioration of the structure has made it necessary to restrict traffic from traveling on a portion of the far east side of the structure.  The deterioration affects a bridge beam located under the bridge rail.  As a safety precaution, traffic will be restricted from using approximately 2 feet of the outside lane – northbound.  To restrict the use, orange traffic barrels will be placed along the far east side of the bridge and will remain in place for the duration of the Six Span Bridge project.

  The department will continue to monitor the situation and further steps will be taken to insure the safety of the traveling public, including closure of the northbound – outside lane if necessary.

   

 

 CR #10

• November 2006

The County Commissioners have selected Alternate 4 for the CR10 Realignment project.  The Commissioners and County Council will now determine the best funding solution.

• January 2007

Letters have been sent to property owners who are most likely to lose their homes.  The letters are Notice of Intent letters and simply alert property owners that the County expects to purchase their property at a later date, and describes the relocation assistance they can expect and notifies them that a County hired appraiser will be making contact with them in the near future to begin the buying process.

• April 2008

Purchase of homes required for the project is now complete.  Vacated homes are being removed by County forces to clear the right-of-way ahead of the construction project.  Purchase of land (not involving entire homes) is on-going and will continue through June.

• Construction plans are 80% complete.  The CR10 and Six Span Bridge replacement projects have now been combined into a single project.  This is expected to result in more competitive construction bids.  Plans and specifications are expected to be completed by September 26, 2008. Bids are planned to be advertised for the combined projects in October2008, with the contract awarded in November.  Some construction work, notably the bridge piers, will begin in the fall of 2008 with the majority of CR10 construction taking place through spring, summer and fall of 2009.
