Highway Department to Share Update at Public Information Meeting

ELKHART COUNTY, Ind. – The Elkhart County Highway Department will host a public information meeting for proposed roadway improvements along County Road 17, from County Road 38 to County Road 142 in southwestern Elkhart County.

The purpose of the public information meeting is to offer the opportunity to review and comment on the current preliminary design plans for the roadway improvement project. The purpose of the project is to improve north-south mobility in western Elkhart County and improve the substandard geometry of County Road 17.

A public information meeting for this project was held in September 2019. At the time of the meeting, the preferred alternative involved a four-lane section on a new alignment meandering east and west of existing CR 17 – similar to what is present along County Road 17 between County Road 18 and County Road 38. Significant public comment provided both during and after the meeting prompted the Elkhart County Commissioners and the County Highway Department to revisit the traffic analyses which influenced the preferred alternative.

As a result of the public input and re-evaluation of traffic data, the preferred alternative has become a two-lane roadway on a similar alignment to existing CR 17. The Elkhart County Highway Dept. looks forward to providing additional information regarding this important roadway improvement project, while continuing to gather input from the public.
